1. Start with the Big Picture
Think about: Style: Modern, farmhouse, classic, spa-like, rustic, etc., Color palette: Neutral, bold, monochrome, or colorful? Vibe: Bright and airy? Cozy and warm? Sleek and dramatic?
2. Choose the Key Surface(s)
Decide what areas you'll be tiling: Floor, Shower walls, Shower floor, Backsplash, Accent wall, Different tiles work better in different places due to size, slip resistance, and texture.
3. Pick One Statement Tile
Choose one tile to be the “star” — maybe it’s patterned, bold in color, or a unique shape. Use this as your anchor.
4. Build Around Your Statement
Now layer in simpler tiles to balance it out: A bold floor might pair well with white subway tile on the walls. A busy mosaic shower floor can be offset by large neutral wall tiles.
5. Consider Tile Sizes
Large-format tiles make small bathrooms feel bigger (fewer grout lines). Mosaics are great for shower floors because they’re more slip-resistant and flexible around slopes. Rectangular vs. square: Laying rectangular tiles vertically can make walls feel taller.
6. Think About Finish & TextureMatte:
Softer look, hides water spots and smudges better. Glossy: Reflects more light, feels clean and bright — but slippery when wet. Textured: Adds depth and can be safer for floors.
7. Don’t Forget Grout Color
Grout dramatically affects the look: Contrasting grout (e.g., black on white tile): highlights the tile shape. Matching grout: creates a seamless, unified look. Dark grout: hides stains better in high-traffic areas.
8. Samples Are Your Friend
Always bring home samples. Check them in your bathroom’s actual lighting at different times of day.
9. Set a Realistic Budget
Factor in: Tile cost per sq. ft. Installation costs, Underlayment, grout, sealers, etc.
